Most of us feel stressed, anxious, worried or afraid from time to time. We may experience things that are difficult to cope with, such as losing someone you love, a relationship breaking up, being bullied, or sexual or racial harassment. Doing something positive may help.
TALK ABOUT THINGSTalk to a friend, teacher, relative, family doctor or someone else you trust about your worries. It can help you feel better. If you feel you have no-one to talk to, you could call a helpline.
ACCEPT WHO YOU ARE. Our beliefs, background, culture, religion, sexuality and experiences make us who we are. Everyone is entitled to respect, and everyone has something to offer. If you like yourself, other people will too!
SEE YOUR FRIENDS. You don’t have to struggle on alone. Friends are important, especially at difficult times. Friends can give and receive encouragement, advice and share good times. You could meet new friends by getting involved in something new.
GET ACTIVE AND LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF. Exercise can really help if you’re feeling down, stressed or worried. It can also give you more energy! Find something you enjoy- you could join a sports class, play football, swim, walk, dance, run or cycle. Taking care of yourself physically, for example being active, eating a healthy diet, regular sleep and not using drugs, alcohol or cigarettes to help you cope with problems can all contribute to you feeling good about yourself.
TRY SOMETHING NEW, GET CREATIVE! There may be things you want to do but don't think you can – give it a go! You could do something creative to de-stress; scribble, draw paint, write a poem, a diary or a story, cook or play music. Learning a new skill can make you feel good about yourself, and you may make new friends.
TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF. If your feeling stressed, relax! Listen to your favourite music. Read a book or magazine. Take up a hobby. Take a walk. Give yourself some time and space to think. Find out what works for you.
