Holiday Stress

School holidays can be a very stressful time.
Your kids are around all the time, making it difficult to get on with your everyday activities. If your kids get bored, they’re more likely to argue and get into trouble.

So what can you do?

Plan Ahead

Try to structure your childs’ day so that they know when they’ll be doing fun things.

Have set times for play and set times for chores

Plan treats in advance

Stick to planned treats

Don’t take away treats as a punishment

Plan Rewards

Plan a reward in advance for when you have to do an ‘adult’ task, such as shopping or visiting a friend, for example a ride on the amusement game at the supermarket

If your child knows that their will be something fun at the end of the task there may be less complaining!

Plan Breaks

Have some time-out if you are getting stressed by your children.

If their are grandparents, another relative or friend you trust living close by ask them to watch the children for an hour or so while you have a break or catch up on things you need to do.

Look out for holiday clubs at leisure centres, churches, story time at libraries etc.

Plan Safe Play Times

Plan times in the day for you and your child to enjoy activities together.

Think about the resources/environment you will need e.g. paints, football etc before you suggest a certain activity.

Plan to Look After Yourself

Set reasonable bed times to give yourself a break

Plan relaxation time for yourself

Meet up with other parents who you trust and share childcare

Remember - Happy Parents = Happy Children!

Plan Help and Support

Look out for activities and event that your child will enjoy.

Contact youth services/clubs

Start checking newspapers and libraries for clubs and events.
